NEXTWAVE!!!!!!
I've been buying them since the series started, and I finally found a chance to sit down with the first five issues and read them all in a row and I gotta say... I was blown away. Each book just gets better and better!
Striking a balance between comedy and action, cheesyness and reality is not an easy task, it's like walking a tightrope, one misstep can send you tumbling into the abyss of one genre or the other. But Ellis's scripts are pitch perfect and seem almost effortless, something that is so impressive to me that I'll be forced to track down his previous work.
Of course the book itself would only be half as awesome if Immonen was not handling the art chores. He's adopted a new art style for this series and I couldn't think of a better artist to work on these stories. Simplistic, but dynamic. His lines are awe inspiring even without colors or word balloons. That's not to say the colorist and letter of the book aren't top notch either, because they are, but I saw some early pages on the net and knew right away this book was going to be great.
So do yourself a favor and pick up these books, which, in my opinion, are some of the most creative/enjoyable comics to come from the mainstream press in a long long time.
