"why do mexicans love the nightmare before christmas"
I don't always check my stats on my site, but sometimes I do, just to see if there really ARE people looking at my website...
Along with stats of where someone is while looking at my site, the U.S., Australia, England, France, Germany, I also get paths of how people got to my site. Whether via a link from a friends site, search engine, or they just happened upon it by accident. (Apparently there is an outlaw named Ben Hall from Australia because we get a TON of hits from people searching for "Ben Hall" Down Under.)
One such search that sent someone to my little space for ramblings was one that is the title of this blog:
"why do mexicans love the nightmare before christmas"
I almost spit out my water I was drinking when I saw THAT one. Oddly enough, I had written about eating at a Mexican restaurant AND the Nightmare Before Christmas in one month and my site came up under that search. Even MORE odd, I DO happen to be Mexican (well, half anyway, I've got quite a bit of Viking in me as well) and I DO LOVE the Nightmare Before Christmas. How funny that someone would happen upon my site looking for something that doesn't appear to be there to the naked eye, but upon further digging, has been there all along.
So, I'll try and answer this question, hopefully the person that found me looking for that answer will be satisfied with it.
I think the reason that Mexicans like NBX so much is because of the symbolism of death not being the end, but just another leg of the journey. Our holiday of Dia de los Muertos (or Day of the Dead to you gringos) is all about celebrating death and remembering family members that have passed. The first day of the holiday occurs on Halloween, which is where its at in NBX, right? Alot of the imagery of NBX is reminiscent of the Day of the Dead holiday. The folks that live in Halloweentown take their job very seriously, and so do us Mexicans. Apparently, we are obsessed with Death and so are the people in Halloweentown. Plus, all the skeletons on the Hangman's Tree and in Oogie Boogie's lair look VERY similar to the calacas and paper mache skeletons that are a staple of the holiday.
So that's why I think Mexicans love the Nightmare Before Christmas so much. At least, that's part of why THIS Mexican does. I hope this helped you, whoever you are, out there that found my site and were curious about this little known phenomenon. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
¡Adiós, los amigos! ¡Véale luego!
